Fedora Packaging.

With help from Debarshi Ray, I tried to do some packaging for fedora. I started with Straw which has be orphaned.
I downloaded Straw 0.27 .tar.gz from here .Put the source to /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES . And took the spec file fedora core 5 .As i am a first timer so Debarshi helped me by writing the spec file for me. I took it from here
Now when i executed the command
$rpmbuild -ba straw.spec
i got the following output .

Now could not resolve the problem of straw.lang . Is it still used as was guessed by tuukka hastrup at #straw.
Previosly I faced a problem of failing dependencies of python-bsddb3.Which got resolved by installing bsddb from here

WBUT-LUG First INSTALL FEST

So we had our experience of 1st install fest at WBUT on last saturday(25th Aug 2007).
Organised by wbut-lug ,and supported by ilug-cal.org ( went there as ilug-cal.org members).
We ( i along with Ajitesh Chaudhury, Arindam ghosh,and Swagnik chatterjee) went from durgapur boarding the morning bus.
The install fest started about 1 hour late (scheduled at 12:00 PM)because this is the the first time and few preparition like 64bit fedora 7 dvd and boot cds took time.
Anyways the respones was good and most of all students were patient and bearing the delay.The student was mix of biotechs (Mtech)and IT/CSE .(Mostly 2nd year).Inspite of rain,student brought their own machines..so there was a mix of owned machine and WBUT machines.
We started with a little inauguration speech by indra da(Indranil Das Gupta).
Then after volunteer introduction, install fest started.Few Notes and howto's were also distributed.Susmit Shannigrahi ( a HITK/WBUTand a fedora ambassador) pass out of this year took the pain and lead .He created a local fedora mirror and also conducted the install fest.
Among student owned machine one acer aspire and a assembled box gave trouble...after rigorous attempt we had fedora up and running on those machines though assembled box gave way.
We also had a non visible cursor machine powered by a microsoft mouse .Though Soumyadip Da (Soumyadip Modok ) just solved in few minutes.
We also had Debarshi Roy who came up with few stickers to distribute.
The install fest went around till 9:30 PM ..and crowd was with us.

My College bought few hp compaq dx2300M microtower machines....though official hp site showed some great configurations but college machines are some what different.Anyways may be a stripped down version or so....some these machines were installed with fedora core 3(college installed it) .And what we had is that intel pro/100 VE network card is not detected.While Some of slower machines had FC5( though thats pathetic to use but still.......)

Why does college buy these machines....spending the same amount as of a more powerful machine.

A Day with fedora

As per schedule ,we organised our " A Day with fedora " .
Its was 10 a.m and it started raining heavily.
We had Debarshi Ray as our guest speaker
and we had :-
Frequent power failure.
A Projecture that has its own mind and shuts down every 15 min.

As our schedule were mainly to show some good stuffs..we felt little shaky at the start. But somehow managed to have a start .

Ajitesh gave a introduction speech about GNU/Linux
Debarshi 's speech about google summer of code created a huge interest among the audience.
( btw we got a good response from 1st year, 2nd year and my 3rd year CSE and IT friends.)
( Also we had few student and faculties from NSHM)
Then kushal 's spoke about fedora.
And i showed them how to configure bluetooth using bluez.( luckily i had my snaps).[that just to create and maintain their interest for a little longer....this session was interactive as we really had volunteers among audiences ]

Then , Kushal and Ajitesh played Open Arena and Xmoto which again created a lot of interests.

Though things were going right..still we didnt get that pace that we expected primarily due to absence of a good projector.

All things we showed them were on our laptops.

Debarshi then gave a hands on( on one of our laptops) on GCC..

Second half we couldn't decide what to do....primarily due to two reason.

1) BCREC administration has wonderful habbit of granting and then refusing.( They granted us the permission of using the seminar hall from 10am to 5 pm , but asked us to leave at 1:20 pm because they are going to organize a seminar on " IT as career " for .............. i dont know who the target audience was??? ")

2) malfuntioning projecture..no dias and no board.

Then our humanities department offered us their softskill lab were we carried on with our further programme with only 32 interested student..who were with us till the end.( coz its a32 seater hall).
Here we introduced our bijra high school project
showed them difference between python and C and advantages of python and little bit pyQt.

And ended our programme..

The end of the day was a mixed feeling.

Bad because of the behaviour of BCREC authorities and no support from them.

Good because we atleast created some interest some students and teachers who listened to us and supported us till the end.

[We even hacked our college alumni site to show them the crap they had created.]

" NSHM " "dgplug "" A DAY WITH FEDORA "

Today went to NSHM ,to invite them for our " A Day with Fedora ".
Met withMr. Rajesh Das , HOD of Computer Application Department. As we talked about the seminar,he suddenly said;
"one and a half year ago NSHM's setup was running in LTSP and fedora. That time we faced so much of problem,that we had to shift to windows...but during that time fedora was quite stable..now that we come to know that you people are working on these things"

we were quit amazed..

He then queried about our Bijra High School project and showed a lot of interest in it .He then showed us what currently they are using for student management...it looked good but its a web based one.

Though the meeting was brief but the response we got from him was quite amazing..we didnt even expect that from our college.

On the other news :-
Our " A day with Fedora " is going to be held tomorrow 17th August 2007 from 10 A.M to 5 P.M At BCREC college campus,Durgapur. Preparations are complete and waiting for a " all thats end well " result.

FLOSS and ME

Last 2 months is always bearing surpise for me. Working with FOSS a never been so interesting for me. Currently Working at wbut with Indra da ,to finalise our bijra server and its 1:51 pm. Over and all the NEWS of FOSS Initiatives that can never be heard of by sitting at home ,can be heard here.which not only creates interests but also a hunger to work more in FOSS ,and with FOSS .

Being part of bijra school project is reaqlly a matter of pride.

Get blue using GNU/Linux

Today we all use bluetooth enabled phones ,here is how you will connect it from GNU/Linux.

A Bluetooth utility is available called Bluez. In order to install Bluez do the following :-
Download the following packages from here.

* bluez-libs-3.14.tar.gz ..
* bluez-utils-3.14.tar.gz ..
* bluez-firmware-1.2.tar.gz ..
* bluez-hcidump-1.40.tar.gz ..
* bluez-gnome-0.13.tar.gz ...

In order to install them run the following commands.
Open a terminal switch to super user by using the command

$ su -

Now as super user or root, use the following commands

The above packages are zipped and archived so run
$ gunzip package name.tar.gz

to unzip them.

Now un tar/un archive them by using the command

# tar xvf package name.tar

Now change to the new directory created

# cd package name

Within the directory execute the following commands.

# ./configure

# make

#make install

[If your using fedora 7 and have an active internet connection then do a

#yum install bluez*

to download and install all packages at once]..

Once installtion complete in the command line type

$ bluetooth-applet [ if you are using gnome ]....

Now right click on the applet ----> preference --- >Visible and connectable to other device.

Now if need is to make a transfer from phone to computer ...
open bluetooth file sharing and send it from your phone.

And if the need is from computer to phone ..... then just right on music file ar picture file or the application you want to send ...you will get a menu consisting of "send as" and" send to "option select Bluetooth OBEX file transfer and send .

After doing rigorous attempt to connect my cyberoam based cable net . Even installed linc ...and started learning gdb in order just to have my net connected from linux.

After all failure .i frustatedly did the following:
opened system-config-network.
new-->xdsl-->account information--> activate

and i am blogging from fedora 7 using that cable connecion.

What a fate....

A summary of what happened during our return journey to Durgapur

Today went to WBUT with ajitesh.

came out late .

Boarded a taxi and asked him to drive fast ..........he almost made arrangement for us to reach hell( still did no "punno") fast.

went to babughat, boarded a ferry.

At howrah station ,a mere two step inside platform landed in a fine of 100 rupees.

jumped into running train(agnibeena express) ..............and reached home totally exhausted.
(No energy left to write a lengthy post)

The whole thing happened in 55 mins.

Local Audio in LTSP 4.2 using fedora 7

ltsp 4.2 shows problem with NASD ,as NASD is the oldest in case of supporting unix terminal server.So while switching from ltsp 4.1 to 4.2 problem may arise with nasd configuration.
So in order to have local sound configuration it is better to use ESD as compared to NASD ,though ESD is quit buggy.
As ALSA is now being the most widely supported ,so it is for sure that vendors will be supporting ALSA as compared to ESD,OSS,aRts ,etc.
sounds confusing right!!!

In order to have sound from your local terminal ,download LTSP-esd-alsa 1.0.0 -2 .Install it in your server.
Now configure your ESD as primary.

Also change preference of media players to have ESD as default.

Bijra & Ltsp & me

Currently undergoing training regarding implementation of LTSP at Bijra High School in WBUT. Few important points goes here.....

1)Server is a intel pentium D 3.0 GHZ with 1 gigs of ram and 80Gb of HDD.it got a cdrom and a cd/dvd combo.
2)Installed full fedora 7 including some features from livna .
3)updated the whole ( all packages ).
4)Downloaded and installed LTSP package from LTSP.org (ltsp 4.2u2).
5)downloaded kernel 2.6.22.1 installation still left to be done.
6) The all common multimedia codecs are installed.

i am so glad on at last having a internet connection on linux.Circumstances are so bad that this peppy little Airtel GPRS connection feels like heaven.

the following i did to connect my motorola L6 with Fedora core 6(ZOD)

First identify your phones AT vendor id and Product id.

using root privilege type the following.

/sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x product=0x

next type the following

wvdialconf create
you will get a output as shown in figure.

now edit the file wvdialconf by the following command.

vi /etc/wvdial.conf
usually a blank file . if something is in it previously discard it.

now type the following.

Dialer Defaults]
Modem = <>
Baud = 460800
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = *99***1#
Username = A
Password = B
Stupid Mode = 1

now save and exit

and the shell run the command

wvdial

you will get an output showing yor local ip,primary DNS ,secondary DNS,and modem type( analog)

..now open your browser and enjoy...

NB: there are so many articles written as a solution to problem of connecting GPRS in linux. A decent googling will surely lead you to the most appropiate solution. Still this is a try to resolve this problem.

I have been associated with Dgplug since april 2006,in this last 1 year (i year 2 months to be specific ) i came to know lot about linux and the Foss world.
This create a strong enthusiam in me for Free and Open source software.
With my this very little knowledge i would like to share a view.

In February 2007 , a meeting was held in Dr.B.C.Roy Engg.College regarding introduction of FOSS electives in our syllabus with WBUT in association with NRCFOSS.

there i came upon a phrase that meaned ' Zero percent tolerance for pirated software'.
Thereby i came across this many times after.

In context with a fake raid by Microsoft and the above ,there lies a loophole in the idea itself.

Suppose i own a computer centre having 10 computers. i ,due to my above mentioned principle,have all genuine propeitary software(say microsoft windows xp and associates) installed in it.
As per schedule say 10 students come across this computers and they are learning something.In any general case few of the following happens:-

1) the student gets gets a wrong idea that microsoft and computer are inevitable part of computing.

2) Even if they didn't ,there lies a strong possibility that every time that student wants to do something regarding computers he/she looks for a familier platform( andas in most cases and here also its Propetiry Soft).

3)Apart from the above ,if each student has a computer in his home ,Despite off all tries there lies very less possibity that each student will buy a genuine copy of propeitary OS and associates.

So even though the try is to lessen piracy,it acually giving a boost to it.

While on the Other hand if the knowledge is shared using FOSS softwares,not only piracy gets lessened( due to no need of it any more) but also knowledge gained is much more than above mentioned case due to availability of a good number of choices.

So we can very easily conclude FOSS not only give us a chance to curb piracy but also increase knowledge.

Only need is to convice the syllabus designing bodies and educational heads about the importance of FOSS.

Bijra Revisited

After nearly about 2 months i along with Ajitesh resumed our Bijra project( as School was closed for annual exam ,results ..). Today we planned to give some quick revision of our previous module and shift to new one.

But start was a glitch,class 10 was found to remeber nothing even very basics. This dissapointed us very much.

Next period was of new class 9 (previously class 8) came up with great enthusiasm.And that really worked. With only 3-4 min of revision we switched to our new module.

Today we started with kbruch(a fun to use mathematical application), public demand was of a song so we used xmms( song was hawa hawa (remix).mp3),and Ajitesh being a good artist came up with kolorpaint which attracted a good attention.

This is a three day event(13th - 15th February). Day 1(13th Feb):The seminar day, talks will be given on different parts of Free Software world.
Day 2(14th Feb):Workshop day, there will be workshops on Python, SVN, PyQt.
Day 3(15th Feb):First meet of NRCFOSS in West Bengal.National Resource Center for Free Open Source Software, a projectfunded by the DIT, Government of India, has its Human Resource wing located at AU-KBC Research Center, MIT Campus of Anna University, Chennai. This team takes care of the HRD aspects of NRC-FOSS, especially in the academic arena.One of the tasks is to introduce FOSS in the formal sector of education. As a first step, they have introduced FOSS Electives - I and II, in the academic curriculum for Under Graduate students in Computer Science, information Technology and Masters in Computer Science streams, in the colleges affiliated to Anna University. They have also trained around 150 lecturers to handle these electives.
The Agenda:1. General Presentation on FOSS and why we in India should beinterested in it.2. Presentation on NRCFOSS and its programs, with emphasis on the HRD in Higher Education part.
